DEPARTMENT OF MICROBIOLOGY
The Department of Microbiology since its inception in 1994 is committed to sowing, cultivating and harvesting knowledge. The department is known for its student centric approach where by the emphasis is on overall development, which is clearly evident in consistent University ranks and outstanding placement record. The Department celebrating its 25th year is known for its constant innovationsreflecting the creative potential with which the Department is well endowed.

Scope of the subject:
Microbiology is a scientific discipline that strives to instill knowledge on both basic and applied aspects of microbes. Equipped with an insight on Virology, Mycology, Bacteriology and Phycology, this subject encompasses Genetic engineering tools and Immunological practices. Microbiology by its practical significance stands a  notch above  in all fields. It is one of the most rewarding professions as it isindispensableto Healthcare, Food and Pharmaceutical industry, Agriculture and Environmental safety. Microbiology is an integral part of day-to-day life and it will be in demand till the end of Mankind.

  1. UG MICROBIOLOGY

    • Under CBCS, the following combinations of are offered as a three-year program.

    • b. NEP:
    • Under NEP, the following credit based courses are offered.

    • PG MICROBIOLOGY

      M.Sc. Microbiology is offered which is a two year program. The eligibility will be a B.Sc. Degree of any Microbiology / Biotechnology / Life Science with 50% marks in aggregate. B.Sc. Honors in Biotechnology, Microbiology, Botany, Zoology or Biology with 50% marks in aggregate in all optional. Graduates in Bachelor of Agricultural science, Dairy sciences, Horticulture, Forestry, Fisheries, Pharmacy, Medicine, Dental, Biotechnology and Agricultural Engineering.

      Along with academic activities, the Departmentendorses holistic development of the students. Micromania is an apt platform given to them to showcase their talent in Cultural, Art and Sports activities. This ensures inculcation of Leadership qualities, Competitive spirit, Emotional quotient and discipline in the students. This annual fest is the most awaited event for every Microbiology student, the memories of which will be etched in their hearts forever.

      ENRICHMENT PROGRAM
      These programs go deeper into the subject in line with the curriculum requirement making students learn the applications of the learnt principles and gain more hands on experience on the respective topics and also show them the exciting possibilities that lie ahead in the discipline

      GUEST LECTURES
      The Department of Microbiology regularly organizes guest lectures by eminent scientists and industry personnel who can share their experiences and thoughts which provoke the young minds of our students resulting in innovative outcomes.It ensures that the students get more than a nodding acquaintance of recent developments. This enables the students to understand the requirements of the industry and the opening for Research and Developments in future.

      IN- HOUSE PROJECTS
      Students of both UG and PG program are encouraged to carry out in small scale research to inculcate research attitude and thirst amongst them.

      INDUSTRIAL VISITS
      Organization of Industrial and Institutional visits for B.Sc and M.Sc students, in and around Bangalore and all over India.These industrial visits are aimed at giving the students an experience of the world beyond college.

      PROBLEM BASED LEARNING
      This is the student-centered pedagogy employed in the post graduate department, in which students learn about a subject through the experience of solving an open-ended problem. In order to inculcate innovative thinking, team building and problem solving capacity among students various topics related to their subjects, current practical problems are put forth to them. As an outcome Students learn both thinking strategies and subject knowledge.

      RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT:

      Spice project:
      The Department of Microbiology is proud to have bagged two projects under the scheme Small Projects in College Education (SPiCE) funded by Vision Group on Science & Technology (VGST), Govt. of Karnataka on the topic “Degradation of poultry waste by keratinolyicactinomycetes isolated from poultry waste dumping sites in Bangalore”. The project was granted to Ms. Dona Saha, Mr. AtiqurRehman and Ms. Sushma, final year postgraduate students of Microbiology and carried out under the guidance of Mrs. SonhitaChel, Assistant Professor, Department of Microbiology and also on the topic “Isolation of plastic degrading microorganisms & optimization of parameters for increased degradation.”The project was granted to Mr. Srujan R., Ms. Hima C. S., Ms. Lakshmi C. & Ms. Hitha C.s.,and carried out under the guidance of Mrs.DeepthiVarier, Assistant Professor, Department of Microbiology

      SMYSR Project:
      The department also has received a project entitled “In vitro and in-situ studies on microbial detoxification of plastic wastes”funded by SMYSR in the year 2012.

      SEMINARS
      Seminars give students intensive exposure to a topic through presentations and discussions led by multiple experts. Seminars improve student’s communication skills and make them more confident.

      SIGNATURE EVENTS

      SOFT SKILL PROGRAM
      To analyze and upgrade theindividual personality traits, social graces, communication, language, personal habits, interpersonal skills, managing people, leadership, etc. among the students.It is also aimed to enhance their communication skills and etiquette for facing the interview and company oriented testing

      WORKSHOPS
      Department Of Microbiology takes constant and continuous efforts to update students with the recent advancement and tools and techniques in various fields of life sciences by conducting workshops in various fields like RDT, Virology, Environmental Microbiology etc.,
