Departments

Zoology and Applied Genetics

The Department of Zoology was incepted in 1994 for undergraduate program, with the aim of imparting quality education to young minds. The Department of Genetics was started with undergraduate program in the year 2000 and PG course in Applied Genetics in 2003. Presently, the two departments have amalgamated into “The Department of Zoology and Genetics”.
Scope of the subject:

Vision
To create and improve the all round competency of the students, so as to enable him/her to become a functional contributing member of society

COURSES OFFERED:
Under Graduate program: Bachelors of Science
The under Graduate degree course is three years programme (6 semesters), affiliated to Bangalore University , Bangalore and recognized by Govt. of Karnataka.

Post Graduate Program: Masters of Science

 FACILITIES:
The Department has well equipped five spacious laboratories for Genetics and for Zoology. The Department has assemblage of various facilities to conduct experiments and research in Molecular Genetics, Human Genetics, Genomics, Immunology, rDNA technology and Drosophila Genetics. The Department has set up a Zoological museum comprising models pertaining to human skeletal system and mammals, specimens of vertebrates and invertebrates and aquarium

ACTIVITIES

The Department, with the aim of conducting basic research and introducing research arena for the igniting minds, offers unique training in all aspects of Genetics by providing  Bridge course, problem based learning (PBL), Workshops, Enrichment programme, Guest lectures and in house projects for undergraduate and  postgraduate student. In order to bridge the gap between academics and industy, regular industrial and field trips are arranged. The postgraduate students are exposed to industrial work culture through collaborative projects.
Apart from academic activities, the Department also conducts annual Department Fest GENESIS, where in the students will get a platform to showcase their talent.

AWARENESS PROGRAM:
To carry out a mass awareness campaign about cancer and its warning signs, and to dispel the myths that people believe; an awareness program on cancer was conducted

BRIDGE COURSE
Bridge course is offered to the newly admitted students before the commencement of the regular classes. It aims at bridging the gap between subject studied at their previous level and the subjects they have chosen. This gives the students confidence and skills for the successful transition to new curriculum. The Department designs the Module which provides the insight in to the subject, Best practice to be followed in Lab, preparation of chemicals, SOP of instruments and also provides career guidance for the future.

DEPARTMENT FEST - GENESIS
Genesis is the science fest conducted by the Department of  Zoology and Genetics, it’s a fun filled day where in students apply their knowledge to play the exciting activities .It not only enhances the ability of students but also give them an exposure to think and engage out of the curriculum

INDUSTRIAL VISIT
The Department of Zoology &Genetics, The Oxford College of Science arranges Industrial and institutional visit for the final year PG and UG students.
Industrial Visit Bridge the gap between classroom theoretical training and practical learning in a real-life environmentand also it provides an opportunity for students to ask questions related to their area of interest.

PROBLEM BASED LEARNING AND JOURNAL CLUB
PBL is a student-centered pedagogy in which students learn about a subject through the experience of solving an open problem and find a solution for the problem. This PBL activity was designed for students to check their knowledge in the subject. The teams were monitored during the intra-team discussions in order to gain a sense of the level of discussion occurring, monitor team dynamics and individual student participation, and to provide insights. It is conducted in each semester.

SKILL DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM:
The Department of Zoology and Genetics conducted a workshop on cardio pulmonary resuscitation (CPR), in association with “Guardians of Heart”_ Manipal Hospital, Bangalore (an initiative from TOSSEC) to create awareness about cardiac emergency.

WORKSHOPS &ENRICHMENT PROGRAMS
Workshops provide an extended forum for small groups to exchange ideas on a specific topic of common interest. Department of Zoology and Genetics has been recognized for conducting workshops for both undergraduates and Post graduates on Application based techniques. Workshops are held twice a year for each discipline area.
